About the Catholic Soccer Camps at the Franciscan University of Steubenville (Steubenville, Ohio)

When: July 6th to the 11th, and July 13th to the 18th, 2008
 
Where: The Franciscan University of Steubenville (Ohio), located 20 minutes from Pittsburgh International Airport, 40 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh (PA) and 1 hour south of Youngstown.

Why: To promote Catholic-Christian values while teaching the beautiful game of soccer at a world-class level.
 
Ages: 6 to 17 years of age (male and female)
 
Check-In: On Sunday afternoon (July 6th and July 13th) between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. at the Athletic Department (Finnegan Fieldhouse) on the campus of Franciscan University of Steubenville.
 
Check-Out: Residential campers check out of their hotel rooms no later than 12 noon on Friday.  The official end to camp is Friday at 11:30 a.m. and all photos can be taken at that time.  Mass for campers and their families is also offered at 12:05 in the afternoon on the Friday of check-out.
 
Mass: Mass will be offered for both residential and day campers every day at 12:05 on the campus of Franciscan University of Steubenville.  Most coaches will also attend these masses.
 
What to Bring: Each camper should bring his or her own soccer ball and at least five (5) soccer jerseys or t-shirts, three (3) pairs of shorts, and three (3) pairs of soccer socks. 
 
Meals: Residential campers receive three (3) full meals per day from Monday through Thursday, as well as dinner on the Sunday of check-in and breakfast on the Friday of check-out.  Day campers will receive one (1) full lunch each day from Monday through Thursday.

Discounts: Yes!  Sign-up by June 6th and receive a 5% discount. Team discounts also available for 7 or more players from the same team (for residential campers only).

Special Goalkeeping Instruction: Yes!  Gino Soave, a former goalkeeper with the US Olympic Team in 1984 and a former goalkeeper with Roma Barilla in the Italian Serie A of "calcetto" (indoor five-aside soccer) in 1986, will be on hand to coach the keepers.  Also, Gino was the Head Goalkeeping Coach at the World Youth Soccer Academy at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex from 1999 to 2003.
 
Residential Camper Cost: $495 per player per week (for residential campers)
Day Camper Cost: $185 per player per week (for day campers only)

Head Coaches – Antonio Soave and Patrick Doering

Antonio Soave was a high school All-American who earned an NCAA Division I soccer scholarship and later went on to train in Italy with Lazio in the Serie A. He played and coached in the United States Interregional Soccer League (USISL) with the Detroit Wheels from 1993 to 1996. He was the Head Coach of the World Youth Soccer Academy (WYSA) at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex® in Florida from 1999 to 2003, and he later served as a consultant to the AC Milan Junior Camps in Vittorio Veneto, Italy. He is currently the host of a nationally televised soccer adventure and instructional show, “The Soccer Academy.”

Head Coach Patrick Doering (FUS Head Coach)

In the Fall of 2004, Dr. Patrick Doering took over the women's soccer team from Chris Ledyard and became the first head coach of the men's soccer team. Doering came to Franciscan University with over 13 years of soccer coaching experience. He has coached travel teams in Ohio and league teams in Pennsylvania. Doering was also the assistant women's coach at St. Vincent's College in Pennsylvania from 2001 - 2002. The Fall of 2006 marked the first year that the FUS soccer teams played at the varsity level. The Lady Barons rose to the level of the competition and remained consistent in their record finishing 11-2-1. The men's team also finished with a positive record of 7-7-1. In 2005, Dr. Doering led both the men and women to stellar seasons with the men finishing 10-2-1 and the women finishing 12-1-1. Both the men and women finished the season by winning the Friendship Cup on their home field. Heading into the Fall 2007 season, Dr. Doering posts a 61-14-8 overall career record.  Dr. Doering received his Bachelors degree in Military History and English Literature at Elon University in North Carolina. He then went on to receive his Masters degree in Systematic Theology from St. Vincent College and Seminary in Pennsylvania. In 2006, he completed his doctoral work and earned his PhD. in Systematic Theology at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

 

 

What Campers Receive:

A. Top level soccer instruction by former pros from around the world, including former professionals from Italy.
B. Soccer guidance and counseling by members of the varsity soccer teams at the Franciscan University (both Men’s and Women’s).
C. Five full days of soccer training and four nights on the campus; all meals and lodging included (for residential campers).  Day campers receive lunch.
D. A soccer uniform with two (2) jerseys and one pair of shorts.
E. A lot of fun Catholic-Christian events to augment the rigorous soccer training schedule.
F. Promotion of self-esteem through the trained Catholic-Christian counselors on campus at FUS.
G. Music ministry and participation in special events.
